Yizkor And The Importance Of Remembrance: A Discussion And Meditation Experience
mer. 9 octobre à 21:00
When we say Yizkor for a deceased loved one, what are we really doing? There is, of course, the traditional view that we are accruing merit for the soul of the departed, but whether or not we believe in this tradition, there is also a psychological need being addressed. This session will look at the Jewish tradition of remembrance from a variety of perspectives. We will review the traditional teachings and discuss their relevance to us today. We will look at modern psychological bereavement theory and in particular the concept of continuing emotional bonds with the deceased and show how it is compatible with Jewish traditions around remembrance. We will then try a guided meditation designed to strengthen those emotional bonds and help resolve any outstanding matters with the deceased. We will finish up by sharing stories about the people in our lives that we remember in order to preserve those ties and strengthen our memories. This is a special Yom Kippur session and is free and open to the public. For more information contact Elliott Familant at [masked].
