If you know anything about Breakneck .. It's RIDICULOUSLY CROWDED on weekends. So ... if you have the day off on July 5, let's go hike Breakneck WITHOUT THE HUMAN STAMPEDE. If you don't have the day off .... just call in sick ... Breakneck is worth it :) About Breakneck: Often called ‘the most popular day hike in America,’ Breakneck Ridge is a challenging climb in Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve about 90 minutes north of New York City. The trails on Breakneck Ridge test hikers of all ages with steep rock ledges and then reward them with sweeping views of the Hudson River. This is a STRENUOUS hike for the EXPERIENCED HIKERS who prefer to go at a SLOW LEISURELY pace ... there's no shame in going slow. WE WILL HIKE AT SLOW LEISURELY PACE AND NO ONE WILL BE LEFT BEHIND. WE WILL ALSO HIKE TOGETHER AS A GROUP. IF YOU ARE A SPEED DEMON AND/OR CANNOT STICK WITH THE GROUP, DO NOT SIGN UP. *IF YOU HAVE NEVER HIKED BEFORE, I DO NOT RECOMMEND BREAKNECK FOR YOUR FIRST HIKE EVER =============
AGENDA: In the morning, we'll meet at Grand Central to take the 9:32AM Metro-North to COLD SPRING station. One-way off-peak ticket from GC to Cold Spring is $15.00 Once we arrive at Breakneck station 11:02AM, we'll Uber or Lyft to the trailhead. TRAIL MAP: https://parks.ny.gov/parks/attachments/HudsonHighlandsTrailMapNorth.pdf AGENDA: the SHORT ROUTE: ABOUT 3 MILES - we'll go up WHITE, then left to Red to Yellow to Cold Spring for dinner and ICE CREAM! THE LONG ROUTE: ABOUT 5 MILES - up white, right on blue to lead back to Cold Spring. At the end of the day, our loop hike will take us back to COLD SPRING STATION on foot (no Uber/Lyft). HIKE INTENSITY: STRENUOUS but DOABLE as long as you COME PREPARED (HIKING SHOES ARE REQUIRED) AND KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT (THE FIRST 1.5 MILES IS ALL ROCK SCRAMBLING UP 1,200 FEET USING JUST YOUR HANDS AND FEET) TOTAL MILEAGE: up to about 5 MILES. DURATION: We will be out for the entire day. If you have to ask what time we'll be done, JUST STAY HOME!!! We will finish when we finish. PACE: SLOW LEISURELY PACE, with plenty of stops for refreshments and taking in the surrounding views, taking the time to savor the sights and sounds of nature. PLEASE, NO SPEED DEMONS!!!! In addition, we'll hike together as a group. If you can't or unwilling to stick with the group, DO NOT SIGN UP. WHO SHOULD COME: Anyone with a sense of adventure and a positive attitude. A smile also goes a long way. Please leave the drama and crankiness at home. WHAT TO WEAR AND BRING: Dress in non-cotton layers. Wear hiking shoes. Bring at least 3 liters of liquid to stay hydrated. Bring lunch and snacks for yourself. Carry all your stuff in a backpack. WEATHER: Rain, snow, polar vortex cancels hike! AFTER THE HIKE: we'll go grab dinner and drinks in Cold Spring before heading home. NO GUESTS FOR THIS HIKE. EVERYONE MUST BE A MEMBER IN THE GROUP. LIABILITY WAIVER: Come prepared. Hike at your own risks. Hold no one liable, etc, etc.
