[masked], [masked] Special Gear / Requirements: Sturdy hiking boots/shoes, with good gripping tread. Warm and cool weather wicking clothing. Food/water as you feel is appropriate, first aid, rain gear (just in case), trail conference map #141. Hiking poles can be of great assistance & give some upper body workout. There are some short ledges that will have to be climbed, but not super difficult. Nervous, ask for help going up or down. Route: We will take the blue marked Escarpment Trail north from the parking/picnic area. At about .3 miles there is a great view from Artists Rock. At about .8 miles we will turn right on the yellow marked trail that goes to Lookout Rock and Sunset Rock, a rather unique area with more great views. At 1.05 miles there is an even better view of the Hudson Valley from Newman's Ledge. At .8 miles past there we come to Bad Man's Cave (actually an overhang) and do a very short rock scramble before hiking .7 miles to the intersection of the MG trail. From there it's a .25 mile climb up to North Point, where there are some moderate ledges to ascend to a large open rock area with spectacular views to the south, east, and north. We'll hang out here for a while for views, snacks, or lunch. We then descend back down to the MG trail intersection and turn right onto the red marked trail, we take 1.35 miles down to North Lake Rd.. Then it's about .75 miles on the paved road back to the parking area. Group Size: The DEC limits group sizes in the Kaaterskill Wild Forest to 20. _____ NOTE: You are responsible for bringing appropriate gear, supplies, clothing, first aid, and lights.
