The Orak Ruins, Jackie Jones Firetower, Big Hill Shelter & 3 Reservoirs!
dim. 28 avril à 19:15
"Into the woods" and up to the sky we go!
This is a combination of two of my favorite, MORE STRENUOUS, challenging hikes and is NOT FOR BEGINNERS or STRAGGLERS! Its' got a little of everything; the great Orak ruins, the Jackie Jones firetower built in 1928, the Big Hill Shelter in the sky, with panoramic views, pristine streams, waterfalls at the start & 2-3 reservoirs! .
The Orak Ruins, for you history buffs, was once a mansion built in 1923 by George Briggs Buchanan, once the V.P. of the Corn Products Refining Co., which manufactured Karo syrup. (Orak is Karo spelled backwards!) After Buchanan passed in 1939, his heirs sold the mansion to the park (lucky for us!) and it was demolished in 1973. This will be approx. a 3-4 hour hike at a Slow/Moderate pace with several breaks to take it all in. We will cover about 5 miles, primarily on the Suffern Bear Mt.(yellow) trail and Woodtown Rd. following along the Horse Chock Creek and all downhill on the way back passing two of the reservoirs. We will be hiking on a short stretch of paved road, then mostly woods trails, very rocky in places, with moderate to STEEP ups and downs, with a little rock scramble and a few small stream crossings. Its' well worth the effort! Weather resistant hiking boots and poles are recommended, as is tucking your pants into your socks(for added tick protection) sun protection, bugspray, WATER IS MANDATORY, binoculars, snacks and cameras of course! Extra socks with a ziplock bag are always good to have along when there are stream crossings. As with all of our events, you are responsible for your own safety and the safety of your guests. Hiking can be dangerous and injuries can occur, sometimes fatal. Trail blazes can sometimes be missing so there is always the possibility of getting off trail and possibly lost. Knowing this you agree to hike at your own risk and we cannot be held responsible for any injuries you or your guest may incur.
If anyone signs up for a hike that is not appropriate for them I will contact them and adjust the attendee list accordingly for their safety and the good of the group. MEET AT THE Stop & Shop parking lot in Pomona, Ny for carpool. We will drive to the parking area for the 3 Reservoirs on Call Hollow Rd. where we will leave a few cars as this will be our final destination. From here we will shuttle over to the trail head parking for the Orak Ruins, just around the corner on Rt.106. Optional dinner or refreshments at Playa Cancun with Hudson River Views, located at 10 Grassy Point Rd., Stony Point, NY, just a few minutes drive from Stop and Shop and across the street from the Riverfront Park, for the first approx. 18 to rsvp for dinner. Separate checks should be available. See photo below of restaurant.
