February 2019 meeting -- Tokyo Socrates Cafe
dim. 24 février à 07:00
This month's topic is: "As technology for human genetic modification becomes more viable, what ethical issues are raised by this development and how should we approach them?" Last November a Chinese scientist announced that he had helped create the world’s first genetically edited babies ( https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-018-07545-0 ), a pair of girls allegedly resistant to HIV infection. An article in the MIT Technology Review ( https://www.technologyreview.com/s/612458/exclusive-chinese-scientists-are-creating-crispr-babies/ ) notes that there are a number of controversies associated with this achievement, summarizing that "Where some see a new form of medicine that eliminates genetic disease, others see a slippery slope to enhancements, designer babies, and a new form of eugenics". Beyond the specifics of this particular case, we'd like to discuss what sort of issues should be addressed as these sorts of procedures becomes potentially more widespread. A few other notes as usual: 1) Though there is no charge for the meetup, please order at least a drink or food item from Good Heavens as they have been kind enough to allow us to use their space without any charge. 2) Please keep your RSVP as up-to-date as possible, even if you're updating on the morning of the meeting.
