Primary food is nourishment that doesn’t appear on your plate. The four core primary foods are exercise, spirituality, career, and relationships. When these areas are balanced, food is secondary. Healthy relationships, regular physical activity, a fulfilling career, and a spiritual practice can fill your soul and satisfy your hunger for life. You can eat all the kale and broccoli in the world, but it’s the robust life you live that will be the real fuel for happiness and balance, sis. In this workshop, you will explore, and collaboratively construct meaning, evaluate, and expand your thinking about the role of primary foods in your own life. With the support of Coach Shan of Brave Heart Health Coaching and your peers, you will dive into exercises to evaluate:

-What you’re going to do in your daily routine to put more primary food on your plate,

-What you will need to keep doing, start doing, and stop doing so that you’re full off life,

-How you will engage your support system/community to support you in your development; and

-Walk away full- with a clear vision for engaging in action steps tailored to meet your personal goals! About Coach Shan

Coach Shan, is an education consultant, youth and holistic health advocate and coach from Queens, NY, currently living in New Jersey. Shantel was only 11 years old when her mother was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure. After watching her mother’s doctors throw in the towel on alternatives to her recovery, placing her in hospice twice, and declaring death over her, Shantel became committed to learning about alternative ways of healing. She began researching holistic alternatives from dietary changes to affirmations and prayers in an effort to save her mother. Together, they prayed away infections that doctors said had no cure, removed her mother from hospice and affirmed her will to live. Shantel learned to advocate for her mother and continued holistic practices with her, prolonging her mother’s life beyond the doctors’ prognoses! Two weeks prior to her mother’s passing, Shantel was diagnosed with cancer. From that day on, she began her journey of self discovery, traveling more, attending therapy, writing, eating foods specific to fighting cancer and other ailments, and worked on the unhealthy relationships in her life. Like anyone else, Shantel still has work to do, and continues to heal herself through prayer and by practicing Reiki. Two years cancer free now, Shantel is more than excited to use her own story in order to encourage the healing of others. Coach Shan is the founder of Brave Heart Health Coaching, a nonprofit named for her mother’s battle with Congestive Heart Failure. Shantel works to raise awareness of holistic healing, healthy habits and lifestyle changes, self care and community through one-on-one and group coaching, and various community service events for women of color. Shantel holds a B.A. in Psychology from Hampton University, and a M.S. in Education Policy from the University of Rochester. She is also certified in Integrative Holistic Health Coaching and Reiki therapy. She remains an active member of the Queens Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. where she volunteers with youth programs.
