Revisiting my very first wine theme, from July 2014: Campania. This is the home of Aglianico, one of the great red-wine grapes of Italy, producing ageworthy wines of deep color, strong tannin, graphite minerality. Piedirosso is the second major grape, producing a softer wine with lush, bright fruit. Some of the great whites of Italy come from here, and we’ll try two—Fiano and Falanghina. Then six reds: two prestige Taurasis with a good amount of age, the cult wine Terra di Lavoro, an unusual Merlot, a Bordeaux blend with Aglianico in the mix, and a Piedirosso. Campania is noted for its volcanic soil, which has become a hot topic lately in wine circles. We can debate whether or not the complex minerality of the soil comes through in the wines. Big reds call for steak, so we’ll meet at Morton’s Steakhouse in White Plains, where their Sunday no-corkage special is a well-kept secret. https://www.mortons.com/whiteplains/ 2015 Feudi di San Gregorio Fiano di Avellino Feudi Studi Campo Aperto $32 (reg. $40)

Wine Advocate 94+ – A gorgeous wine that delivers stunning results on the palate, where it shows a careful balance between quasi-creaminess and flinty mineral sharpness. The wine delivers density and texture but is weightless at the same time. 2016 Donnachiara Falanghina Resilienza $18

Vinous 91 – Ripe, sweet, textured canned peach and apricot jam aromas and flavors are complicated by a hint of cinnamon and vanilla. Rich and ripe, with outstanding length. It’s hard to argue with this wine’s in-your-face, sultry charms. 2013 Fattoria Galardi Terra di Lavoro $50 (reg. $85)

Vinous 94 – Captivating aromas of black cherry, cocoa, graphite and sweet spices, subtle notes of dried flowers, and woodsmoke emerging. Plush and seamless; round and full, but with enticing perfume to the saline red berry, cherry and minerally flavors. Polished tannins and a graphite nuance. This is a beauty. 80% Aglianico, 20% Piedirosso. 2006 Salvatore Molettieri Taurasi Vigna Cinque Querce $45

Wine Advocate 94 – An utterly impeccable, brilliant wine. Vibrant dark cherries, flowers, and minerals all flow onto the palate with remarkable concentration. The proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove. Delivers incredible richness while retaining tons of clarity, inner perfume and harmony. A fabulous effort. 2008 Guastaferri Taurasi Primum Riserva $32 (reg. $80)

Vinous 94+ – Aromatic herbs and underbrush dominate at first, then hints of pomegranate, red currant and ink. Very smooth, with polished tannins nicely supporting the broad flavors of tangy red berries, flint and botanical herbs. Showcases just how great Taurasi can be. An extremely impressive wine. 2013 Feudi di San Gregorio Pàtrimo $49

Wine Advocate 96 –Flaunts its confidence and greatness. The fruit is very young and plump, but there is enough of it to carry the wine over the next decade or two. The freshness and purity of the fruit is the wine's driving force. Dark cherry, raspberry and dark plum lead the charge. Enormously encouraging and inspiring vintage. 2013 Montevetrano $47 (reg. $75)

Wine Advocate 92 – 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 30% Aglianico. Starts off slowly but it does reach full speed with a few quick swirls of the glass. The bouquet needs a little patience before it shows a complete bouquet of rose, spice, dark chocolate and dried blackberry aromas. 2010 I Pentri Castelvenere Piedirosso Kerres $25

Not reviewed. From Roberto Vinci wine blog: To the nose, violet, dried flowers, wonderful note of fresh, juicy, crisp blackberry and mulberry, rich, dark, with infinite perfumes, captivating, intoxicating. Then, Mediterranean scrub, peppery notes. Beautiful mineral structure. In the mouth, simply infinite, very intense. The tannin is not tannin. It is a Persian carpet suspended in the air that envelops the fruit without being noticed. Mulberry and blackberry dominate the palate. Great finesse and an endless pleasure to drink.
