Cat Rocks--Pawling, NY
sam. 9 novembre à 15:30
Unlike many hikes to Cat Rocks in Pawling, which begin at the Old Dover Oak on West Dover Road or at the Metro North Train Station on Route 22, we will begin our hike at Old Route 55, which is a more direct, easier, and much shorter route to this wonderful overlook from West Mountain to the Harlem Valley below. The trail from Old Route 55 (a woods road really) to Nuclear Lake is flat and about 1 mile. The trail to Cat Rocks from Nuclear Lake (about 2 miles) is a mostly gradual incline of about 600 feet. The total round trip distance is about 6 miles. I would rate this hike as somewhere between easy to moderate. Directions: To get to the trailhead from Poughkeepsie take State Route 55 east to Old Route 55. Old Route 55 (no sign) is about 2 miles east of Route 216, and about 100 yards east of Route 292, on your left. Take a left (heading east) from Route 55, and then after 100 yards pull into the dirt parking lot on your left. Hike Summary: Distance: 6 miles Type: In and out Total Elevation Gain: 600 feet Maximum Elevation: 850 feet Advertised Hiking Time: 3 hours Actual Hiking Time: 4 to 5 hours (a leisure walk, plus 45 minutes for lunch) Features: Nuclear Lake, the AT footpath, and Cat Rocks Trail: Combination of woods roads and footpaths. Map: GPS: N[masked], W[masked] (In minutes, not degrees!) Gear: It is recommended you wear sturdy hiking boots, and bring trekking poles, a light backpack, a liter of water (or more), bug spray, a compass, snacks, and lunch. Bring several layers of clothing that can be added or removed as weather conditions warrant. Optional gear might include sunglasses, hat, scarf, light rain jacket, and binoculars. I sometimes bring my MSR Pocket Rocket 2 stove kit, especially when the weather is cool, which allows me to make hot coffee or cider; and when the mood strikes my fancy--a hot lunch. I especially like Tasty Bite’s Indian Madras Lentils, which I can make in 10 minutes on my Pocket Rocket. Trail Details: We will visit Nuclear Lake, walk a section of the AT, and stop for lunch at Cat Rocks. Rain Date: Rain cancels. You will be notified the night before. A new rain date will be announced. Important Links: Liability Waiver: This hike is not organized by a professional hiker. Hiking or outdoor activities have inherent risks.
