Undercliff/Overcliff Carriage Roads Loop--Mohonk Preserve
ven. 28 juin à 15:30
We are finally going to the Mohonk Mountain Preserve! This 5-mile carriage-road loop, suitable for snowshoeing, passes spectacular cliffs of the Shawangunk Conglomerate, and offers expansive views of the surrounding hills of the Wallkill River Valley. Later in the winter, when the ground is covered in six inches or more of snow, we will return for a day of snowshoeing. Very nice, indeed! After our walk, my wife and I plan on dining at the Mountain Brauhaus (see link below). All are welcome to join us. Directions: To reach the Visitor Center located at 3197 State Route 55, Gardiner, NY, take the New Paltz exit 18 off of the NYS Thruway. Go 7 miles west (through New Paltz) on Route 299 to the end: make right on Route 44-55 and then 1/2 mile to the Visitor Center on right. If that lot is full, continue a few hundred yards farther up hill to the entrance to additional, overflow parking lots at the Visitor Center. WE WILL MEET AT THE VISITOR CENTER To get to the trailhead: From the eastern end of the parking area, follow the West Trapps Connector Trail (yellow), which leads east, parallel to Route 44/55. In about a quarter of a mile, you will reach the Trapps Bridge, where a stairway leads up to the Undercliff and Overcliff Roads. Don't cross the bridge, but at the top of the stairs turn immediately to the right, and walk between two huge boulders. Pathfinder:
West Trapps Connector Trail (Yellow) east to Trapps Bridge
At top of stairs, turn left, then right at the junction, passing between two huge boulders
Follow Undercliff road for about 2 miles
Take the left onto Overcliff Road (marked by a sign). Do not cross bridge.
After about 2 miles you will reach the Tripps Bridge Junction
Turn right, then turn right again, descend the steps, and follow the West Trapps Connector Trail back to the parking lot. Hike Summary: Distance: 5 miles Type: Loop Total Elevation Gain: 150 feet? Maximum Elevation: 1,100 feet Advertised Hiking Time: 3 hours Actual Hiking Time: 4 to 5 hours (a leisure walk, plus 45 minutes for lunch) Features: Trail: Combination of gravel roads, snowmobile trails, and footpaths. Map: Trail Map 105, Shawangunk Trails, NY/NJ Trail Conference GPS:[masked], [masked]. Gear: It is recommended you wear sturdy hiking boots, and bring trekking poles, a light backpack, a liter of water (or more), bug spray, a compass, snacks, and lunch. Bring several layers of clothing that can be added or removed as weather conditions warrant. Optional gear might include sunglasses, hat, scarf, light rain jacket, and binoculars. I sometimes bring my MSR Pocket Rocket 2 stove kit, especially when the weather is cool, which allows me to make hot coffee or cider; and when the mood strikes my fancy--a hot lunch. I especially like Tasty Bite’s Indian Madras Lentils, which I can make in 10 minutes on my Pocket Rocket. Trail Details: We will walk the Undercliff and Overcliff gravel carriage roads built in the early 20th century by the Smileys, who owned the nearby Mohonk and Minnewaska Mountain Houses, for horse-drawn carriages. As a result, the walk is fairly level and easy. Rain cancels. You will be notified the night before. A new rain date will be announced.
