This month, we'll be going to Akura Sushi, a fine Japanese restaurant in east Midtown. They also serve Japanese food other than sushi, with entrees starting at about $13 up to Sashimi Deluxe being about $22. A menu is here: https://tinyurl.com/y632dhm2 Note that the restaurant has all kinds of Japanese food in addition to sushi (see menu). A $5 DEPOSIT is required to RSVP, which will be REFUNDED IN CASH 10 minutes after the event starts. Latecomers and no-shows forfeit their deposit. People who change their RSVP to "No" more than 24 hours before the event begins will receive a full electronic refund. ------------------------------------ Joram van Klaveren, an Islam-hating, far-right Dutch politician, decided to read the Koran in order to write a book criticizing it. He wound up converting to Islam. At least he went into his project with an open mind! https://tinyurl.com/y64m7uo4 I don't really find the result all that surprising. My own experience when I tried to read the same book in 2002 was that, even though I didn't enjoy reading it and was far from convinced of its truth, it was so powerfully persuasive that I put it down because I was unsure that I could make it through to the end without converting to Islam against my will. https://tinyurl.com/yxeoz7fj ------------------------------------ When the Soviet Union collapsed, many in the West anticipated a new era of freedom, democracy, and prosperity for the region. But it was not to be. During the transition to capitalism, bureaucrats embezzled vast sums of wealth and siphoned it off into the international banking system. It's estimated that about half of Russia's wealth was stolen and shipped out of the country. One would expect such money to have found its way to places like Switzerland or the Cayman Islands. But it turns out that the American banking system, and American real estate, have become the biggest international havens for the fortunes of kleptocrats in the world. https://tinyurl.com/ycr4sr9m It wouldn't be surprising at all if the reason that Trump will never criticize Russia is that he's neck-deep in all this. ------------------------------------ This essay, "What the Critics of Liberalism Want", is very interesting. By "liberalism", they do not mean the moderate or extreme left; they mean the consensus that our economy and society should be run by capitalism, aggressively deregulated, with free trade and open borders, which would lead to good outcomes for everybody. https://tinyurl.com/y2kro77a
