Thursday, December 13, 7 PM The climate emergency demands urgent action. Extinction Rebellion NYC (XR NYC) is starting up to resist business as usual and demand action to cut greenhouse gas emissions to zero. You are invited to join XR NYC, mobilize your networks, and step up your activism. https://gotcm.org/xrnyc1213 Please contact organizers Greg Schwedock (The Climate Mobilization) and Jeanne Bergman at [masked] or[masked]. = = = = = From: Gregory Schwedock
[masked] Allies, You’ve probably heard the exciting news from London: Extinction Rebellion (XR) has initiated a major campaign of escalating non-violent direct action (NVDA), demanding a WWII scale climate mobilization that eliminates UK greenhouse gas emissions by 2025, draws down excess C02, and reverses ecological overshoot. On Halloween, XR launched a month of civil disobedience. On November 17, they shut down five bridges in London and planted trees in Parliament Square. Affinity groups using swarm tactics blocked traffic and critical infrastructure around the city. This is not purely symbolic civil disobedience-- the aim is to create a measurable economic impact and eventually to shut down London. I’ve been assisting XR to expand internationally, especially in the US and of course NYC, where Jeanne has jumped on as coordinator as well. The UK movement is growing fast and it could go nonlinear as more actions make their mark. They are looking to us to be as ready as possible in the US. At https://xrebellion.org/ you can dive in and learn much more. I hope reading/watching core materials [link below] and seeing the videos coming out of the actions in London make you feel that tingle down your spine and know that this is one of those times you can’t sit out. https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5bda9184c3c16a86b3c38cc5/t/5bdbbca0575d1f7287ffa8b6/1541127328235/A+Declaration+of+International+Non-Violent+Rebellion+Against+the+World%E2%80%99s+Governments+for+Criminal+Inaction+on+the+Ecological+Crisis.pdf = = = = = = XR envisions: A focus on direct action: We envision direct actions—many of them, large and small, around the city and beyond, that call attention the climate catastrophe and lay out demands and solutions. In the UK this month, XR has been blocking traffic and occupying public spaces. A decentralized, non-hierarchical, but coherent movement: While all XR actions must align with XR’s principles and demands, this is an open, diverse, and progressive movement. We collectively create the structures we need to challenge power. Monthly XR general meetings: These will be held in varied neighborhoods in Manhattan and Brooklyn. These meetings will usually be held during the first week of each month. XR general meetings will include plans and updates on XR actions in NYC and globally, and generally feature a speaker, a training, and/or an art build. The formation of affinity groups: These groups will meet separately on their own schedules, in addition to participating in the general meetings. Affinity groups are defined in the ACT UP Glossary as “A group of people organized around a single intent, tactic, or focus for the purpose of executing specialized sub-actions during actions or demonstrations.” Most XR NYC actions will be initiated by affinity groups, and either implemented by the affinity group alone, or organized by the affinity group with the participation and support of many more activists.
