A region that needs no introduction, which is a good thing because Meetup only allows me 4,000 characters here. I’m featuring all the major grapes and appellations (along with some minor), including some star producers. The Nebbiolo-based Barolo, Barbaresco, Gattinara. Barbera d’Alba and Dolcetto Dogliani, which aren’t always the lightweights one might expect. Light, berry-flavored Freisa (perhaps the name comes from the French word for strawberry?). Classic Piedmont white Arneis. And an oddball white based on the rare Nascetta grape. We’ll make an overdue return to Piccola Trattoria for an early Sunday dinner. https://www.piccolany.com/ 2016 Elvio Cogno Langhe Anas-Cëtta $30

Jancis Robinson 17.5/20 – Straw yellow. Unusual, complex and fascinating nose of waxy lemon fruit. A little saline too. Quince and grapefruit beautifully intertwined with acidity. Gorgeous texture. Needs more age to show its true potential. Nascetta grape. 2016 Giovanni Almondo Bricco Delle Ciliegie Roero Arneis $25

Not rated. 2015 vintage Vinous 92: “One of the very few Arneis that can be said to be a wine of true distinction. Pear, green apple and jasmine notes are beautifully delineated, but the wine's texture places it in the realm of Piedmont's most intriguing whites.” 2013 G. D. Vajra Langhe Freisa $35 (reg. $45)

Vinous 95 – The 2013 Langhe Freisa Kyè is remarkably polished and, dare I say, elegant, in this vintage. The bombastic style of some years past has been supplanted by a much more silky, perfumed expression of Freisa. Bright, nuanced and finely sculpted, the Kyè offers extraordinary finesse. Lavender, rose petal, sweet red cherry and mint are laced into the exquisite finish. What a gorgeous wine this is. 2014 G. D. Vajra Barbera d’Alba Superiore $27

Vinous 92+ – The 2014 Barbera d'Alba Superiore might very well turn out to be better than the 2013! Vibrant, lively and intense, the 2014 possesses striking aromatics and tons of sheer appeal. Vibrant sweet red/purplish fruit, blood orange, sweet spices and hard candy infuse this exceptionally beautiful vibrant Barbera. 2015 Chionetti Dolcetto Dogliani San Luigi $27

Vinous 92 – The 2015 Dogliani San Luigi packs a serious punch, with a huge core of dark red cherry and plum fruit, matched by intense tannins that need time to soften. Raspberry jam, smoke, leather, cedar and incense meld into the creamy, expressive finish. This is impressive stuff. 2013 Musso Barbaresco Pora $40

Wine Spectator 94 – An elegant, floral-tinged red, with strawberry, wild cherry and mineral aromas and flavors. Lean and firm, but also intensely flavored in an ethereal way. Best from 2019 through 2025. 920 cases made. 2012 Pio Cesare Barolo Ornato $75 (reg. $140)

Vinous 93 – The 2012 Barolo Ornato is terrific. The Ornato is the most changed wine at Pio Cesare over the last decade, now that the estate has backed off of the nearly black, oak-laden style that was in vogue in the 1990s and early 2000s. There is no shortage of depth or intensity, but the estate captures all of that in a much more classic style these days. A host of dark stone fruit, spice and leather notes flesh out in a deep, intense Barolo endowed with plenty of tannic punch. 2007 Vallana Gattinara $33

Jancis Robinson 17.5/20 – Rosehip tea and chipotle and hibiscus – exceptional, spellbinding on the bouquet alone. Thrumming with spice in a silken web of tannins, rose petals and fading cherries. A wine that finds half-forgotten stories, drifting memories, and weaves poetry from the fragments. Hauntingly beautiful. Wine Enthusiast 94 – This fragrant Nebbiolo opens with intense, ample aromas of kitchen spice, chopped herb, leather, dark-skinned berry, tilled soil and a whiff of pressed rose petal. On the firmly structured smooth palate, notes of licorice, cinnamon and truffle accent a core of juicy dark cherry. Polished tannins provide the framework while a mineral vein energizes the finish. Drink through 2022.
