Mansions, Magnates and Mrs. Astor's 400
lun. 4 mars 2019 à 17:00
You'll be transported back in time to when Mrs. Astor was the doyenne of the Gilded Age's social scene, along with her amanuensis Ward McAllister, who helped her create her infamous "list of 400." The home with the ballroom that could hold her 400 guests has long been demolished (although an even more famous building now stands on that site). Nevertheless, we'll be able to see the exteriors (and at least one lavish interior) of some of the extant mansions of the uber-wealthy moghuls of the turn of the last century: Morgan, Whitney, Plant, Fish and more. I'll share some of the stories of how these industrialists amassed their wealth, who they hired to design their decadent palaces and other interesting tidbits about what went on in these magnificent manses. As always, we'll have lunch together as a group. I may change the date to coincide with Restaurant Week...once they announce the dates. We'll walk approximately 3 miles at a pace of about 20 minutes per mile. Please choose comfortable shoes and water if you'll need it.
