Please see below for important registration info. . . . Event Info
The Youth Services Bureau is the largest, most comprehensive youth service agency in the Ottawa area, providing a range of services for youth and their families, including two youth emergency shelters. The shelters provide a safe environment for homeless youth looking to stabilize from the personal tragedies which led them to living on the street. A shelter is more than just a physical structure which protects youth from the elements. A shelter at YSB is a safe haven for young people to begin to rebuild their lives and focus on their futures. YSB gives street-involved youth the opportunity to make life-changing choices towards a brighter future, and our services are unparalleled in Ottawa. For more information on the SleepOUT event itself, see the event on our site ( https://www.ysb.ca/ysb-charitable-foundation/events/sleepout-for-youth/ ) SleepOUT is an experiential fundraiser unlike any other where participants sleep outside at an assigned campsite with their team. Participants are challenged to only bring a tent, sleeping bag and the contents of one regular-sized backpack for the night, regardless of the weather. All SleepOUT proceeds go to YSB – the only
provider of youth emergency shelters in our city. Volunteer Tasks
Helping participants tear down tents and exit the site, returning borrowed equipment from on-site restaurants, moving tables/chairs back into concourse, assisting vendors with load-out (sound equipment, breakfast station, etc), garbage & recycling, and signage & registration tear-down. This is a labour intensive position that requires lifting. Volunteer Registration: Volunteers are asked to arrive at TD Place 15 minutes prior to the start of their shifts to familiarize themselves with the site and sign-in at the volunteer registration table and sign the Group or Special Event Volunteer Policy Application & Agreement. In addition to RSVP to this event, please e-mail the volunteer coordinator at YSB at [masked] . Dress Code: Volunteers will spend the entirety of their shift outdoors, so please dress sensibly for the time of year, as the event will proceed regardless of the weather conditions. Volunteers will also be provided with a lanyard and badge and are asked to wear it as an identifier during their shifts. Personal Items: A secure area for personal belongings will not be provided and YSB cannot be responsible for any items that are lost or stolen. Please bring your own backpack or fanny pack to carry any personal items. Transportation: Please visit http://www.octranspo.com to plan out your route if you will be busing. Bus routes #1 and #7 travel directly to TD place. Weather permitting, bike parking is also available on site. Complimentary parking will be provided to volunteers - lot location to be determined. Underground parking will also be available, for a fee, and is accessible from both Bank Street and Queen Elizabeth Driveway. Visit http://www.tdplace.ca/parking for more details. Food: Complementary meals will be provided to both evening and morning volunteers. This event was a lot of fun the last couple of years and the Pay it Forward team had a blast. Hope to see you out!
