LIMITED ATTENDEES: Spoon Carving: Green Wood, Carving Axe, and Knife

After this introductory spoon carving class, the world of working wood safely – without toxic materials or loud messy machines – will be open to you. In this class, we’ll learn the techniques for carving spoons from green wood, using a hatchet, a straight knife and a hook tool. This work is some of the most exciting green woodworking happening today. Limited to two students per class, each student will have their own chopping block (wood stump), be supplied with a double-bevel hatchet, and a “sloyd” knife. Using freshly-cut birch, apple, cherry and other woods, each student will split their blank, hew it to shape, and finish carve their piece with a knife. You will receive one-on-one attention with demonstration and examples. Not only will you know how to make a good spoon, but you will be part of a group of carvers with regularly scheduled meetups to continue your project, start new projects, and hone your skills for working wood with simple hand tools in a beautiful Bushwick studio for a nominal cost. You need bring nothing but your enthusiasm for working with your hands and learning an age old craft passed down through the generations.
