Peak Fall Foliage on 6 Mile Hike Up Bear Mountain on New Appalachian Trail
sam. 27 octobre à 16:15
With the days growing shorter, we will do a hike with a bit fewer miles, but with the opportunity to view the peak fall foliage in this region, while climbing up Bear Mountain on the newly rebuilt Appalachian trail, which was the first section of this iconic trail originally opened in October 1923. We have lunch at a scenic viewpoint overlooking the surrounding mountains, and then take the historic revolutionary woods roads trails back to the Bear Mountain Inn. There we can top off the hike with mouthwatering Panda Paws ice cream, and visit the Bear Mountain Traders Post and other fun places on the grounds. There will be easy access back to Manhattan by bus from the Inn. We will hike at a steady, intermediate (not fast, but definitely not slow) pace over a distance of 6 miles, with some steep hills on hiking trails with varied terrain. Cumulative elevation gain will be approximately 1500 feet. There are no special skills or equipment required, other than to wear hiking boots, and have at least 2 quarts of water/sports drinks along with lunch. However, hikers should be in good condition to complete a fairly strenuous hike (Per AMC policy, please no dogs, unless indicated otherwise). Rain or even questionable forecast may cancel or modify; check Meetup website for latest updates. We meet at 10:15 at the Bear Mountain Inn. The transportation information for both public transportation leaving from Port Authority and cars (AMC Trans code: 4F on the AMC New York-North Jersey website) is indicated below. Please purchase a one way ticket since there may be rides back to the city offered, and arrive a bit early to allow time to purchase tickets, and getting to the proper gate (usually gate 408 but check at ticket counter). There is a $10 Bear Mountain State Park parking fee per vehicle for those driving. 4. 8:45 a.m. COACHUSA/Short Line [masked] www.coachusa/shortline).
