Founders, entrepreneurs and innovators of startup and emerging growth companies have a lot to think about and do to best position themselves for success and to achieve their goals. Often they are intensely focused on developing their products, software or solutions, creating a sustainable strategy and business model, and raising the capital necessary to fuel their success. As a result, they can forget, or ignore, the fact that they also are employers. Because the human capital of startup and emerging growth companies is mission critical to their success, it behooves them to pay close attention to employment law matters. The discussion will focus on five employment law tips that every startup needs to know and consider. Lindsay M. Sorin represents employers in a broad range of employment law matters including harassment, discrimination and whistleblower litigation. She has worked on matters for clients in cases before federal and state courts in New Jersey and New York and has handled matters before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights and the New York State Division of Human Rights, as well as the federal Department of Labor, New Jersey Division of Labor and Workforce Development and New York Department of Labor. As a member of Littler’s Emerging Technologies and Venture Capital Industry Group, Lindsay works frequently with emerging growth companies, incubators, and accelerators on all aspects of the onboarding process. Lindsay leads manager trainings, reviews employment agreements, drafts handbooks and advises on human resources decisions. Lindsay has also developed Littler’s New Jersey X-celerator, the firm’s onboarding tool for tech startups.
