We’re approaching that time again, the most overhyped wine event of the year, when every wine merchant announces: le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé! Of course there’s much more to Beaujolais than that bubblegum-flavored stuff. Let’s try some serious Beaujolais. The popular perception of Beaujolais is that it’s cheap, easy-drinking, mass-produced wine that’s not meant to age. Which is largely true. But given a combination of prime vineyard sites, old vines, low yields, and hand harvesting, some Beaujolais wines can be pretty formidable. We’ll start with a Chardonnay-based Beaujolais Blanc. Then a basic Beaujolais-Villages by a great maker. Then five bottles representing four crus: Morgon (from the famous Côte de Py vineyard), old-vines Chénas, Fleurie (two, one youthful, one more mature, both from very old vines), and Moulin-à-Vent (from a tiny, low-yield, old-vines vineyard). We’ll meet for Sunday brunch at Twisted Oak in Tarrytown. http://www.thetwistedoakny.com/ 2016 Jean-Paul Brun Beaujolais Blanc Terres Dorées $18

Jancis Robinson 16.5/20 – All the breadth on the nose of a Mâconnais white. Much depth and interest. Real savor and smoke, the sort of characteristics you might expect of a very decent village Meursault. 2016 Jean Foillard Beaujolais-Villages $17 (reg. $25)

Vinous 91 – High-pitched red fruit and lavender aromas, picking up a mineral nuance as the wine stretches out. Juicy and precise, offering intense raspberry, bitter cherry and spicecake flavors. Vibrant style, very long, smooth finish that echoes the red fruit note. Drink[masked]. 2015 Jean Foillard Morgon Côte de Py $20 (reg. $41)

Vinous 94 – Mineral-accented blackberry, cherry and licorice aromas are complemented by a sexy floral nuance. Juicy and concentrated, offering intense red and blue fruit and spicecake flavors sharpened by zesty acidity. Extremely long on the finish, which features dark berry and spicecake qualities and smooth tannins. Drink[masked]. 2016 Pascal Aufranc Chénas en Rémont Vignes de 1939 $12 (WTSO)

Vinous 93 – A highly expressive bouquet evokes fresh red/blue fruits, Asian spices and smoky minerals, along with a sexy floral pastille nuance. Penetrating on the palate, offering raspberry, boysenberry and spicecake flavors with juicy acidity. Distinctly elegant. Drink[masked]. Jancis Robinson 16.5/20 – Ridiculous price for a wine made from vines planted in 1939. Very savory nose. Dense yet accessible with notes of bitter cherry, ink and real texture. Excellent potential. A wine to get the saliva flowing. Long and lovely. 2015 Clos de la Roilette Fleurie Cuvée Tardive $25

Vinous 93 – Sexy, highly perfumed scents of red fruit liqueur, candied flowers and 5-spice powder, along with a smoky mineral topnote. Concentrated raspberry and rose pastille flavors show impressive energy, with a suggestion of Asian spice. Powerful and lithe, finishing very long. Drink[masked]. 2011 Domaine Jules Desjourneys Moulin-à-Vent Chassignol $50 (reg. $84)

Wine Advocate 92 – 90-year-old vines. Intense nose: crème de cassis, blueberry, boysenberry jam and a hint of allspice. Intense cassis and blueberry fruit, an undertow of white pepper and Chinese 5-spice, finishing in a muscular fashion. Vinous 92 – Heady, spice-accented aromas of red and dark berry preserves, incense and candied violet, with a hint of woodsmoke. Expansive blueberry and cherry cola flavors are energized by a jolt of juicy acidity. Packs a serious punch and shows excellent depth. Drink[masked]. 2010 Domaine Jules Desjourneys Fleurie Les Moriers $35 (reg. $70)

Wine Advocate 94 – Deeply concentrated plum and cherry fruit are allied to iodine-tinged saline, sweet shrimp shell reduction. White pepper and musky rose radish tweak the nostrils and re-emerge as an invigorating adjunct that encourages me to imagine that a profoundly intense Grüner Veltliner Smaragd had been blended in. Nutmeg and toasted pecan complement the intense ripeness of fruit.
