*YES RSVPS ONLY PLEASE. If Meetup doesn't interest you simply do nothing. Please be sure to read through Meetup description before you rsvp** Let's take a hike on the Old Croton Aqueduct (OCA) trail and soak in the fall foliage colors. This is the FIRST of FOUR planned hikes on the OCA. For this Meetup, we'll start hike in CROTON HARMON. Then we'll walk over city streets to pick up the OCA in CROTON HARMON and then head NORTH to a very scenic stop at the New Croton Dam; then SOUTH to eventually reach OSSINING where the hike will end. Total mileage for the day: about 9 MILES over EASY BREEZY terrain. About the OCA: The The Croton Aqueduct (later known as the Old Croton Aqueduct) was New York City's first water supply system. It was built between 1837 and 1842 as the solution to the city's over population and the twin scourges of fires and diseases, and served as NYC's first water supply system with fresh water delivered from Westchester all the way to Bryant Park/42nd Street. The Aqueduct remained in service until 1965 when it was supplanted by the New Croton Dam and other newer reservoirs. Links to read more about the OCA:
https://parks.ny.gov/parks/96/details.aspx Today, the unused OCA pipe remains underground, but above it is a scenic path that winds through urban centers and small communities and passes numerous historic sites, preserves, a museum highlighting the construction of the Aqueduct, and through the backyards of many private residential homes. GETTING THERE: In the morning, we will meet at GC to take the 10:30AM Metro-North to CROTON HARMON. One-way off-peak ticket from Grand Central to CROTON HARMON is $10.75. AGENDA: From Croton Harmon, we'll proceed over city streets to pick up the OCA trail, first making our way NORTH to a very scenic stop at the NEW CROTON DAM, then SOUTH to eventually reach OSSINING where our day will end. Post-hike, there will be an OPTIONAL dinner at Karma Lounge, in Ossining - they serve some FANTASTIC ceviche!!! We can do dinner and drinks before heading home. Return trains from Ossining to GC leave every hour. One-way off-peak ticket from Ossining back to Grand Central is also $10.75. HIKE INTENSITY: This will be an EASY BREEZY hike and walk through packed-dirt paths running through a forest, while some parts are asphalt and concrete streets and sidewalks. DURATION: We will be out for the entire day. I cannot guarantee finishing time so if you have to ask, you're just better off staying home. We will finish when we finish. PACE: SLOW LEISURELY pace, with plenty of stops for refreshments and taking in the surrounding views, taking the time to savor the sights and sounds of nature. PLEASE, NO SPEED DEMONS!!!! In addition, we'll hike together as a group. If you can't or unwilling to stick with the group, DO NOT SIGN UP. WHO SHOULD COME: Anyone with a sense of adventure and a positive attitude. A smile also goes a long way. Please leave the drama and crankiness at home. WHAT TO WEAR AND BRING: Dress in non-cotton layers. Wear hiking shoes. Bring at least 3 liters of liquid to stay hydrated. Bring lunch and snacks for yourself. Carry all your stuff in a backpack. WEATHER: Rain cancels hike! LIABILITY WAIVER: Come prepared. Participate at your own risks. Hold no one liable.
