Objectively Evaluating Historical Figures
sam. 20 octobre à 18:00
Every year, there is a controversy over Columbus Day, raised by people who think it is not good to venerate a man who had a morally flawed character in his dealings with the Indians. People also attack the Founding Fathers for owning slaves, and there has been a call by people to tear down statues of Confederate generals. College campus buildings named after historical figures that were either racist or supported slavery are also under attack, as people want to rename them. In this meetup, we will discuss how one should go about objectively evaluating historical figures and apply them to some of America's historical figures including the Founding Fathers, Christopher Columbus, and Confederate generals. We will also discuss whether the trend of attacking controversial historical figures is good and what it says about the broader culture.
