Fort Totten See Cannons +Tunnels +Historic Buildings + Shore front Walk
sam. 20 octobre à 17:30
As usual the attached map is incorrect. We meet in the Fort Totten parking lot, at the entrance to the fort, at 11:30, start the event at 11:45. Bring food and water as there are no facilities at the fort. We start by walking around the fort and the waterfront to the historic display house (Visitor's Center). Inside there are artifacts and items from the fort's history. Next we go to the entrance tunnels and then up to the cannon battery to see the cannon emplacements. There were replica cannons in place the last time we were there but they may have been removed. The view is across the entrance to Long Island Sound which was defended by this fort against enemy naval access, upto and including WWII. We also will pass many historic and some abandoned buildings on this site. An optional walk for those interested, will be along the waterfront path of Douglaston Bay to the marina along the bay shore. This will begin after we tour the fort area. This will add about 2 miles and one hour to the walk. By joining us you agree to participate at your own risk and not hold us responsible for any unforseen accidents or problems that may arise. The hike is free, but Meet up charges us for the use of their website so we would like to ask you for an optional donation, if you care to, of $1.00 to help us pay the Meet up fee. Hope to CYA there
