So, what is a ‘Zero Marginal Cost Society’? Can it really take us, as Jeremy Rifkin argues, to a new age of nearly free goods and services, creating a global collaborative commons, and potentially transcending capitalism? In this film, Rifkin explains how the ‘internet of things’ is lowering the costs of many physical items, how the internet is bringing humanity closer together and how it is potentially decentralizing production. On the flip side, however, the questions remain if and how everyone will be included, and what impact ‘The Zero Marginal Cost Society’ might have on our environment. So, what does this all mean for our future? Let’s watch (BE THERE ON TIME) and then discuss this serious and important talk. Our discussion will be every bit as serious. If you wish to view the film in advance and see it again when we meet (which is a good idea), here is the url: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-iDUcETjvo FYI, Rifkin has served as an adviser to President Nicolas Sarkozy of France, Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, Prime Minister Jose Socrates of Portugal, Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero of Spain, and Prime Minister Janez Janša of Slovenia, during their respective European Council Presidencies, on issues related to the economy, climate change, and energy security. Rifkin is also a senior lecturer at the Wharton School's Executive Education Program at the University of Pennsylvania where he instructs CEOs and senior management on transitioning their business operations into sustainable Third Industrial Revolution economies.
