Chinese Scholar's Garden and Sri Lankan food in Staten Island

We'll visit the Chinese Scholar's Garden at Snug Harbor in Staten Island (a 19th century retirement community for indigent sailors that is now a city park and cultural center), followed by an optional Sri Lankan dinner. You can read about the Garden at their website:

http://snug-harbor.org/botanical-garden/new-york-chinese-scholars-garden/ GETTING THERE: Take the subway to lower Manhattan: 1 train to South Ferry 4/5 train to Bowling Green, or R train to Whitehall. Exit and walk south to the Staten Island ferry terminal with its big blue neon sign to take the FREE ferry at noon. After landing in Staten Island at 12:30, we'll take the S40 bus at Gate D to travel along Richmond Terrace, less than a 10-minute ride. We'll spend a couple of hours exploring the Chinese Garden and the Snug Harbor grounds. Please note there is a $5 admission fee to the Garden ($4 for seniors 65+ and students). Tickets can be purchased onsite at Cottage E. Staten Island is known for its Sri Lankan community. Following our Snug Harbor visit, we will walk 2.5 miles through the striking Victorian architecture of New Brighton to gorgeously-decorated Lakruwana, known far and wide for its delicious weekend buffet. (If you'd rather not walk, public transit options are also available.) Afterwards, we'll take the Staten Island Railway back to the ferry. Lakruwana's buffet is ~$15 (cash only).
