The LWVNYC is pleased to offer VOTES for WOMEN! This fall reading and discussion series is developed and sponsored by Humanities New York. “With its thematic focus, this reading and discussion program offers an unusual twist on the standard book group format by making time for thinking deeply about one idea, over time, from a variety of perspectives,” says Sara Ogger, executive director of Humanities New York. At the LWVNYC, participants will come together over the course of six sessions from October through early December (10/19, 10/26, 11/9, 11/16, 12/7 and 12/14), to discuss a variety of thematically linked texts with Crystal Joseph, Vice-President of the organization. About the series: 2017 marks the Centennial of Women’s Suffrage in New York State, and in 2020 the nation will celebrate 100 years of the 19th Amendment. The history of the women's suffrage movement in our state and nation spanned seventy years, from the 1848 meeting convened by Elizabeth Cady Stanton in Seneca Falls to the tactics wielded by Alice Paul, and includes overlooked stories and actors such as the African-American suffragists. Our book selections — which include history, biography, and fiction — provide a window into this chapter of American social progress and a springboard into ongoing discussions of women's — and by extension, our society's — past, present, and future. *** This program welcomes members, college students and the general public to explore our rich history and share in the League’s continual commitment to an educated citizenry and participatory governance. The program is free and open to the public, although pre-registration is required. Participants must register via email, by Friday, October 12 th 2018. For more information about the series dates and acquiring books, please contact the coordinator, Crystal Joseph at [masked] Something special happens when we talk about what we read with others in our community. Humanities New York’s Reading & Discussion programs are designed to foster active reading and thinking, incorporating texts that serve as catalysts for civic engagement, cultural understanding, and personal reflection. Reading & Discussion programs are held in communities across New York State. For more information about VOTES FOR WOMEN!, visit www.humanitiesny.org.
