Join the celebration on the New Haven Green of an original and unique icon, not of a sectarian religious cast, but a secular purpose to bring us altogether. Brand new is the built-in interactive feature to engage those who approach it. The theme is the motto “People United by Values Rather Than Divided by Beliefs"l The celebration will be held on the New Haven Green at 3:30 p.m. followed by a reception. For more information see yalehumanists.com or contact [masked]. Parking on street or at York Street municipal garage. The event and public art installation reflect a new current in the secular sphere that finds humanists and other nonreligious people developing a positive articulation of meaningful secular lives. The public art project was first conceived and launched by Chris Stedman, then the director of Yale Humanist Community, with New Haven artist Ted Salmon winning a design competition. The YHC and other secular groups financed the project through private donations. The expansive New Haven Green is the original and current center of New Haven, the second largest city in Connecticut. “We see the Lighthouse as a symbol of connection for people who may feel left out during the holidays with the various religious displays on the Green that don’t represent them,” says YHC Executive Director Kathleen Green. “We often think of a lighthouse as a beacon of hope, and in this case it's a beacon of warmth and community that lets people know they're part of this community. Wherever they find themselves on the religious spectrum, they are welcome and connected to this community.”
