Not So Urban Athletics: North Fork Winery (and Maybe a Beach) Bike Tour
sam. 29 septembre à 16:45
MULTI-MEETUP EVENT We’re going to roll in to fall with an trip that I’ve done many times on my own but is an experience so joyous that I have to overcome my selfishness and share it with the masses. Join me as we spend the day bike touring and tasting the wares at several vineyards on Long Island’s North Fork, capped with possibly a late afternoon beach session if we're experiencing a bit of Indian summer. The plan ... We'll gather at the Mattituck train station in Long Island to begin our adventure. Leaving the sleepy village on our bicycles, we’re going to peddle along what may be the most beautiful country road anywhere. Here we’ll stop at several small wineries to enjoy their wares and soak in the scenery. This is going to be a casual day on our bikes, a slow and easy ride suitable for most—we’re not doing a training run for the Tour de France. If we experience a bit of unseasonable weather, we’re going to head to a local beach to enjoy the rest of the afternoon on the sand. The last part of our ride will bring us back to Mattituck to depart for home. If the day is going so well and no one wants to go home just yet, we’ll find a local eatery to enjoy ourselves a little longer in to the evening. But wait, I don't have a bike! Not a problem! Dan's Bike Rental service has you covered and he'll deliver a rental bike right to the Mattituck train station for you. The cost is $30 for the day. You'll have to text him at[masked] to arrange the rental; for more info visit Dan's website at www.greenportbikerental.com. The important stuff ... • This is going to be a super-casual ride of about 18 miles in distance. Most of the ride will take place on flat terrain and on quiet country roads but there will be parts with some automobile congestion. You must be comfortable riding in a group and in traffic. Helmets are strongly suggested. • Leave your evening open as this event could take 4 hours or it could take 12 hours. Our time is limited only by the amount of fun the group is having. • Dress for physical activity. If the weather is unseasonably nice we'll visit the beach, meaning bring your swimsuit, towel, and sunblock. • Bring money for wine tastings and lunch. • Make sure your bike is in good working order before the meetup and bring a lock in case we need to leave our cycles. • Rain or similar un-favorable weather cancels the meetup. • Check your email the evening before for last minute meetup updates as well as my mobile phone number which will be sent to those who RSVP. How to get there ... Mass Transit
Yes, LIRR trains. You have to purchase a lifetime bike pass for $5.00 on the spot at the terminal or on board the train. But to meet the group, you must catch the 8:12AM train from Penn Station to Mattituck. You’ll arrive at the Mattituck station at 10:41AM where I will meet you. Train fare is $21.25 each way plus the $5.00 bike pass if you are bringing your own. There are a maximum of 8 bikes allowed per train so arrive to the station early By Car
Simply plug Mattituck train station in to your GPS and hit "navigate", it's about a 1.5 hour drive from Manhattan. Street parking around the station is free and plentiful.
