Coney Island to Rockaway via Floyd Bennett Field
sam. 29 septembre à 16:00
This one was a major success when I did it in the winter so we will do it again. For this extravaganza, we will start at the Nathan's across the street from the Coney Island subway terminal and work our way down the Boardwalk through Coney Island ,Brighton Beach and beautiful Sheepshead Bay. We will then proceed adjacent to Shore Parkway until we reach Flatbush Ave at which point, we will turn right and head south toward a relatively unknown piece of NYC history - Floyd Bennett Field(FBF) which is across Jamaica Bay from JFK Airport. Opening in 1930, FBF was the first commercial airport in NYC and was the start or end point of many air travel speed records before it become a government base in 1941 after the advent of LaGuardia Airport. It currently has a visitors center which tells the story of the area, including the ecology, and a hangar which houses an extensive collection number of historic aircraft, including planes piloted by the Wright Bros and Wiley Post.Last time we had a spontaneous guided tour from one of the men working on restoring the aircraft. There are also some areas to take some great photos.Total distance from Coney Island to FBF is about 6-7 miles and there is busstop directly in front of the facility to connect those who wish to stop at this point with the subway.
For the more adventurous, after having lunch on the FBF grounds, we will head south across the Marine Park/ Gil Hodges Bridge. Walking across the bridge provides a wide panorama of amazing views of, among other things, Jamaica Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, the Rockaways, Staten Island , Coney Island, the Verrazano Bridge and the Manhattan skyline. Once in the Rockaways, depending on the time situation we will look a number of the more interesting sights before taking the Ferry back to Lower Manhattan or Brooklyn, depending on which stop is more convenient for you. Both the bridge and the Ferry trip will be a bonanza for those who like to take pictures. The price of the ferry is the same as a subway fare.
The entire walk will be about 12-13 miles. There will be bailout opportunities at a number of bus stops along Flatbush Avenue.
