I'll be giving a 30 minute slide show on some popular climate skeptic arguments, and why they're wrong, with some talk about solutions. This will be followed by a 90 minute free format discussion of what people want to talk about. Of particular interest is the fact that the climate issue has fallen victim to the extreme polarization and tribalism of American political debate, with the two ends of the political spectrum isolated from one another and both wrong about some things, for lack of contact and cross-examination from the other side. At this point, any attempt at climate action taken by liberal administrations will be rapidly dismantled by the next conservative administration. The problem can't be solved that way. A very intelligent liberal friend told me that the most realistically feasible approach is for the Democrats to control the presidency AND both chambers of congress for 30 years straight, because Republicans are completely impossible to reason with. I share neither his optimism for the prospects of the Democratic Party nor his pessimism about the conservative mind. I also lack his enthusiasm for what the country would look like after 30 years of uncontested Democrats in power. We had 20 years straight of uncontested Democrats in power under Roosevelt and Truman, and by the end of that the top marginal tax rate was 90% (which Paul Krugman thinks was just dandy). So the question is, how can we achieve bipartisan support for climate action? You MUST RSVP, give your name when you do, and bring a photo ID to the event; otherwise the security guards won't let you in. Free pizza and soda will be provided. Doors will open at 6:30pm for people to meet each other and discuss things while we're still setting up, with the presentation beginning at 7pm. This event is a co-listing of an event of the Climate Change Science, Engineering, and Economics Meetup: https://tinyurl.com/ydfnn8k5
