Hey team - We're finishing up our tour of the Mediterranean in post-Civil War Barcelona with the Spanish novel 'Nada' by Carmen Laforet. Published in 1945 during the Franco dictatorship, the novel is narrated by its main character, Andrea, a young woman that leaves her small town to attend university in the aforementioned war-ravaged city. Throughout the novel Andrea struggles between memories of her well-off family before the war, and the crumbling ruins of their lives now that the war has finished. The novel was a sensation when it was finally approved by the Francoist censors, and is considered a core part of Existentialist lit in Spain. As you read think of the connections between this novel and the previous ones we've read in the series The paperback version on Amazon is under 300 pages. There are copies available in stock at The Strand as well.
