SciArt Book Club: Art Theory
jeu. 13 septembre à 00:30
In our increasingly complex world, knowing a little about a lot not only grounds our own interests within all spheres of knowledge, but helps us foster the holistic thinking that will illuminate our questions with innovative and unique points of view. At the SciArt Book Club, we aim to cover a variety of big topics through short texts - specifically, through Oxford's Very Short Introduction series, which provide concise yet comprehensive introductions to some of today's most scientifically and socially vital topics.
_____ September 12th club meeting:
Book: Art Theory: A Very Short Introduction by Cynthia Freeland
Link to purchase book/audiobook: https://www.amazon.com/Art-Theory-Very-Short-Introduction/dp/0192804634 What is art? Why do artists make it? Why do we value it? While scrutinizing
various art theories, Professor Freeland highlights the rich diversity of art and its relationship with beauty, culture, money, sex and new technology - producing what Arthur C. Danto calls “[a] smart book … that moves so swiftly and with so sure a footing through the battle zones of art and society today.”
_____ The SciArt Book Club meets every 5-6 weeks on Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30pm. Each session is hosted by Paul Poggiali and features one other club member as co-facilitator. While it is not necessary to have read the text, attendees are strongly encouraged to do so in order to participate more knowledgeably and dynamically. All book club meetings are free and open to the public, but please be sure to RSVP so we know you're coming.
