Read and Discuss: Animal Equality: Language and Liberation by Joan Dunayer
dim. 28 octobre à 19:00
Hi everyone, For this meetup, we are going to be focused on an important and unusual book: “Animal Equality: Language and Liberation” by Joan Dunayer. In our several years of meeting, we have not yet read a book that specifically focuses on the ways that we might use language to inadvertently reinforce or even promote speciesism. As critical readers and as we contemplate our own verbal and written communication about non-human animals, this book strikes me as invaluable. It includes some interesting appendices including non-speciesist style guidelines and a thesaurus with “alternatives to speciesist terms.” In our quest to increase awareness of the plight of non-human animals, we can make an impact by considering our word choice: I’ve noticed that ever since I replaced the word “meat” with “flesh,” in my conversations, my non-vegan friends have taken notice... and that’s just one of hundreds of suggestions in this book, some of which you might also want to adopt as your own. As usual, we will be serving vegan food at this meetup... please feel free to bring a vegan dish or snack. If you do not bring food, I’d appreciate if you would donate $5 towards room and food expenses. If you do bring a dish, I recommend something not too messy as we have to leave the room exactly as we found it. We will not be providing beverages but there is a snack bar in the library which sells a collection of juices and water. For those who are new to the library, there is a parking garage in the back. I hope to see you at what promises to be a thought-provoking discussion of an excellent book! Laura The Princeton Public Library does not advocate or endorse the viewpoints of meetings or meeting room users. The $5 charge mentioned above is a suggested but not obligatory donation to help me cover the room rental, food, and occasional movie screening fees. These much-appreciated donations may be placed on the table in the room where we meet.
