If you ask any portrait or fashion photographer what the most important thing to make a great photo is, the obvious answer is light. But would be the second most important thing? Probably not the gear, the clothes nor the model. Make-up. The work of a makeup artist can make pictures stand out, or completely ruin them. Proper makeup can reduce the post-processing work to next to nothing. Inadequate makeup, even applied by a professional makeup artist, will make your pictures look wrong no matter how good the light is. Do you know what photographers should absolutely recommend models to do prior to a photoshoot in order to have makeup look the best for a photoshoot, and stay untouched during the whole session? Did you know that completely different makeup should be applied according to how scenes are going to be lit? What silly things do photographers ask, that experienced makeup artists know will look terrible on pictures? What can a makeup artist do in 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour? How does skin types affect what can be achieved? Most photographers don’t have a clue, don’t want to ask, don’t know what to ask to MUAs to start with. What is so different between preparing for a photoshoot and makeup to wear during the day? Even if models do their own makeup, what should you recommend to get the outcome they expect? More importantly, what exactly is a makeup artist doing? How do they choose what colors to put, and where? As a photographer, understanding the core of their work is immensely useful in order to know how to build a lighting setup. It is also essential to correctly edit pictures in Photoshop: the ideal skin edit in Photoshop is exactly what a makeup artist would do. In this session, a professional makeup artist will answer all these questions, and more. We will do live shootings and watch the drastic changes makeup can do to pictures. I will show how to reproduce some makeup techniques using Photoshop. As a photographer, you are bound to learn a lot of material that will radically change the look of your future pictures.
