“A Beeline to the Cross”? Charles Haddon Spurgeon & Biblical Interpretation’ A talk by Thomas Breimaier on his PhD research.
This focuses on the eminent nineteenth-century Baptist preacher, C. H. Spurgeon, and surveying some key encounters with the Bible throughout Spurgeon’s life. These include his conversion as a teenager in a Methodist Chapel, his increasing popularity in mid-Victorian London, as well as his work as a publisher and educator. He was the pastor of the largest Protestant congregation in the world, with over 3,500 sermons published as well. An outspoken abolitionist and social reformer, Spurgeon also participated in the founding of several social relief efforts which continue in some form throughout the present day.
