Join Israel Collier for a special reading club "Rap Lyrics: An Analytical Discussion on the "N-Word" and its Historical Implications"
The most important thing is dedication! YOU NEED TO READ/LISTEN TO SOME MATERIALS BEFORE COMING TO THE EVENT. THE CONVERSATION WILL BE BASED ON EVERYTHING ISRAEL SHARES WITH YOU!
For the January 19th session you need to read/study:
- "The meaning of July Fourth for the Negro" by Frederick Douglass
- "The story of O.J." by Jay-Z
You can find them online, we'll post the links below, or stop by ARC and staff will help you get a hard copy.
The N-word is a unique term used in the English language. For most, the term is an injurious insult with grave historical implications, a word that has tormented African Americans for centuries. Howbeit today, it has become a popular term of endearment by many African Americans, the very descendants for which the derogatory term was used upon. The term is quite often heard in rap culture and among many youths today—black and white—the N-word can mean friend.
