Intercambiador Plaza Castilla

Like every mountain range, the Sierra de Guadarrama is full of legends about magical spots and curious rock formations. This time we'll pass by one of them, the Devil's carriage, above the Fall changing colors oak forest called Horcajuelos and the little Finnish forest reservoir, crossing creeks and wooden bridges here and there. Keep reading about the legend! An area that passe through the beautiful El Paular Monastery before getting back to the cute Rascafría town for a beer and, if you want, briging back a sweet treat from its artisanal chocolate factory!

Oak forests just as they enter the Autumn, but also lots of creek side trees on the cute Finnish forest, with its old wooden sauna and little jetty. Along the trail you can see firs, birches and large poplars, mistletoe... all the way to the entrance to  El Paular Monastery (XIV century). Then the route continues between rock formations all the way up to the Devil's carriage where we'll go up and check, in between it's granite walls, pretty views of the Lozoya valley below. After getting back to Rascafría through yet more oak forests we'll have time for a beer and even a little stop at the local chocolate factory.

The carriage of the Devil, in the time of king Carlos V, is a solid reminder of the times when Juan Guas, architect of the Cathedral of Segovia, seeing that he did not meet the construction deadline, sold his soul to the devil and then mysteriously began to see results. Carriages full of granite stones from the quarries of Colmenar started to multiply and run  across the mountains from Madrid to Segovia. At some point Juan Guas repented about selling his soul and  the angry devil, in return, petrified the last of the carriages that Juan needed to finish one of the towers, leaving this granitic rock formation called "El Carro del Diablo". And, they say, that's why one of the towers of the Segovia cathedral is shorter than the other

We'll pass by the Monastery of El Paular (built year 1390 aC) a Benedictine monastery whose monks make their own liquor that you can buy at the shop :)

Please note that, although covered by our insurance, everyone is responsable for their own actions and behaviour, no jumping off cliffs head first please!!!

End time is approx since hiking, unlike a train ride, depends on the group's slowest person and any other circumstances we find along the way.
