There’s a point on this riveting portrait of the artist Joseph Beuys when he deigns to be photographed without his hat. His chapeau is such an iconic trademark that the moment takes you by surprise, as if he is somehow revealing more than his pate. Using video and audio footage, much of which has never been made public before, Andres Veiel’s compelling documentary probes, analyses and celebrates Beuys’ eventful history and enigmatic legacy. Beuys survived World War II after suffering a horrendous injury, became the first German artis to be given a solo exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in New York and made it his life’s work to be a thorn in the side of the German establishment, through his art, teachings and political affiliations.
