This event is co-organised by Kuala Lumpur Urban Sketchers with PAM Heritage and Conservation Committee and Carcosa Negara. This event will take place in Carcosa Seri Negara located on two adjacent hills inside the Lake Gardens, Kuala Lumpur.
THE BUILDING :
Built in 1896-1897, the Carcosa mansion was the official residence of Sir Frank Swettenham, the first British High Commissioner in Malaya. The Carcosa mansion was designed based on the eclectic fusion of Neo-Gothic and Tudor Revival styles.
On the other hand, Seri Negara or known as Beautiful Country in English was originally known as the Governor’s Residence but changed to the King’s House in the later years. King’s House was later returned to the Malayan Government and reopened as the Istana Tetamu (Guest’s Palace), a place to host many visiting dignitaries.
Both Carcosa and the Guest’s Palace were served as hotels later, with Carcosa being rebranded as Seri Negara. The mansions’ colonial architecture and interior designs were well preserved and complemented with colonial-themed hotel service to be marketed as a luxurious heritage boutique hotel.
In conjunction with Merdeka, an inaugural exhibition called “Jalan Merdeka” was launched on Aug 31 in Carcosa Seri Negara, showcasing never-before-seen artefacts telling the untold history of Malaya’s road to independence. Over the period of the next three years, Carcosa Seri Negara will be used as a museum, an event space for performing arts and culture, a resource centre on the history of the building and much more.
