Book repair specialist Peter Packery will present an advanced course on the repair of old hardcover books at the Afrikaanse Taalmonument in Paarl from 16 to 18 October 2017. Packery has more than 40 years’ experience in bookbinding and restoration, including the repair of very valuable books. He previously worked in the South African Library’s restoration department and ran his own bookbinding and restoration company for 26 years.
The three day course focus on techniques such as leather bindings and gold-foiling. It is suitable for participants who have already acquired the basics of book and paper conservation. Instruction is bilingual. The following topics will be included: advanced techniques and working procedures, leather – binding and repair, alternative covering materials,
gold foiling and advanced repair of the case binding.
The attendance fee is R1 500 per person. The workshop takes place from 09:00 to 16:30 in the Conference Room in the Visitor Centre at the Taalmonument. Participants may bring their own tools (including a bone folder) or a set of tools can be ordered for an additional R200. Tea and coffee included. Participants may bring their own lunch or they can support Volksmond Coffee Shop.
The Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en -monument annually presents a whole series of courses and workshops focusing on the development of basic professional skills. This year’s programme includes subjects such as archiving (28 to 30 August 2017), language tourism (21 to 23 November 2017) and star trails photography (11 November 2017 and 10 February 2018).
