Vinegar Hill is one of the most iconic battlefields of Irish History. Thanks to the support of Wexford County Council, it is now the subject of the most extensive battlefield archaeology investigation that has yet taken place in Ireland. This work has encompassed historical research and map-based analysis, landscape survey, underwater investigations, geophysical prospection and licenced detection survey. This talk coincides with one of latest phases of survey work on the battlefield, and will discuss what we have learned to date and what we hope to discover in the future.
Daniel Shiels is a battlefield archaeologist with Rubico Heritage Services Ltd. Formerly a military curator at the National Museum of Ireland, he has published and lectured widely both nationally and internationally on the history and archaeology of the Irish military experience.
