Who: YPFP Members
In September 2004, Kenther Ramos arrived to the US from his native Venezuela as a political refugee. For a 16-year-old political activist just starting university in Caracas, it was an unexpected turn of events that came about as the result of a horrifying experience – kidnapping at gunpoint, threats to the lives of friends and family, and imprisonment – set in motion by the security services of the Venezuelan government under President Hugo Chávez, who saw Ramos as a threat.
After such an experience, anyone else might have thrown in the towel and stepped away from a life of activism. But Kenther Ramos, who was accepted into the US as an immigrant and is now an American citizen, has strived to continue to be an advocate for human rights and to fight for social justice, most recently in his role as a Fulbright Scholar concentrating on Applied Human Rights at the University of York in the UK.
Join YPFP with support from The U.S. Mission to the European Union - USEU Brussels for a special conversation with Mr. Kenther Ramos to learn about his experience as a political activist in Venezuela, how he envisages activism in the current political climate, and how we can play a role in positively influencing and affecting government for the betterment of society.
A light reception will be held at the event, generously provided by the US Mission to the EU.
