We perform JS Bach's Cantata Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen BWV 12 in a service of Lutheran Vespers for St. Anne's Lutheran Church in the City of London.
The Gospel reading for the Sunday for which the cantata is written, Jubilate, is from John 16 (v20): "I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy." We immediately thought of the comedy/tragedy masks of Matthew Spender's sculpture Barbican Muse, pictured above, as a monument to this (literal) emotional volte face.
Bach Vespers is free to attend (with a voluntary collection) and last about an hour. Tea & coffee are available.
