Film Fringe & The Leeds Bicycle Film Club have joined forces for International Women's Day! We're bringing you a rare screening of the 2016 documentary Ovarian Psycos.
The Ovarian Psycos are an unapologetic band of cycling sisters, a misfit crew from the predominantly Mexican-American neighborhoods of East Los Angeles who carry the baton for the feminist and Chicano movements of the ’60s and ’70s.
They ride together at night through the dangerous streets of LA in an act of protest mixed with guerrilla theater, raising consciousness of present-day feminist issues, specifically violence against women. One of their leaders, Xela de la X (a pseudonym she says is in homage to Malcolm X), is a single mother and poet M.C. She organised the first Luna Ride seven years ago, which was the founding event of the group.
The world of cycling may have a reputation for being excessively white and male-dominated, but the provocative actions of Ovarian Psycos go some way to redressing that balance!
