A two day 452km dash from Alice Springs to Finke (Aputula) and return. This is an endurance sprint that follows the route of the historical Old Ghan Railway along bush tracks passing through numerous pastoral properties and settlers ruins from days gone by. Washouts, creek crossings, corrugations, huge desert oaks and thousands of ‘whoops’ make this the mecca for off roaders. Not for the faint hearted, but the ultimate challenge.
The event is a spectacle that attracts up to 15,000 spectators who camp along the 226kms race corridor and 100+ media clambering for that shot and that story. With thousands of interstate visitors making the journey to the Centre and with a new story written each year, this is THE event on the racing calendar around Australia.
The Tatts Finke Desert Race is the Ultimate Desert Race which anyone can enter. As a competitor, you can line up against the very best in the country and an increasing international field. Those who come to Finke will compete, triumph, finish or fail... but all will leave satisfied that they have participated in Australia's Greatest Desert Race.
