Purcell/Britten - Chaconne

Stravinsky - Pulcinella Suite
Prokofiev - Symphony No. 1 (Classical)
Rumon Gamba, conductor
Benjamin Beilman, violin
In the hands of renowned English conductor Rumon Gamba, tonight’s concert transports us back to earlier eras, evoking a sense of nostalgia for what we imagine as simpler times past.
Britten, Stravinsky and Prokofiev were all writing during the troubled era of the 20th century, and while Britten’s masterly arrangement of Purcell’s Chaconne conjures up Baroque-period England, Stravinsky and Prokofiev pay tribute to the Classical age, with the former’s elegant, disarming Pulcinella Suite and the latter’s fizzing First Symphony.
The mood of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto moves from a sad wistfulness to exhilaration and joy, and we are thrilled that young star violinist Benjamin Beilman returns to give us his interpretation of this evergreen work.
