QPF2017 is proud to present a day of sessions at Brisbane Square Library showcasing writers who have experienced mental health issues and the impact of institutions, as well as poets & authors who write to the body and the impact of chronic illness & pain.

Join interstate writers Tim Heffernan, Alise Blayney, Ariel Riveros Pavez and Verity La editor/poet Michele Seminara, along with members of Words on the Street (from Brisbane’s School of Hard Knocks), as they perform work that draws upon lived experiences in the mental health system.

Writers Tim Heffernan, Alise Blayney, Ariel Riveros and Verity La editor/poet Michele Seminara take part in a panel discussion about how mental health has shaped their work and the power of poetry for reclaiming one’s voice in times of psychological distress.
230-330pm The Remission Society: Writing & Chronic Illness

This panel discussion explores the ‘other’ by giving a voice to those in what Arthur Frank calls ‘the Remission Society’. Where in literature — indeed, in poetry — are the voices of those who experience chronic illness or pain? Join the conversation, led by author Heather Taylor Johnson and featuring award-winning poets, playwrights and writers Andy Jackson, Rachael Wenona Guy, Quinn Eades and Stuart Barnes.
4-5pm Shaping the Fractured Self: Book Launch

This reading showcases some of Australia’s finest poets who happen to live with chronic illness and pain, giving voices to sufferers, carers, medical practitioners and researchers, building understanding in a community of caring. Featuring readings by editor Heather Taylor Johnson and award-winning poets, playwrights and writers Andy Jackson, Rachael Guy, Quinn Eades and Stuart Barnes.
