Sun 27 August à 16:30

Timezone : Paris (GMT+02:00)

H F Redmond Junior Memorial Park

MEET at H F Redmond Junior Memorial Park in Yonkers at 10:30am. ENTRANCE ON COOK AVENUE.

Note: I will be walking from Van Cortlandt Park around 242nd street to the meeting place in Yonkers at 8:30am. I will be walking the route of the hike. If anyone wants to meet me at VCP rather than Yonkers and do the same hike there and back, you are more than welcome to join me. Message me on meetup or text me before 8am. Otherwise, meet in Yonkers.

An approximately 4.5 - 5 mile hike from H F Redmond Memorial Park in Yonkers to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Redmond Park is where the eastern tributary of the Mosholu River (aka Tibbetts Brook) takes its headwaters. We will be walking on the South County Trail for part of this walk and the above-ground portions of the River will run somewhat parallel to the course. We will stop by Tibbetts Brook Park and then walk to Van Cortlandt Park through to Tibbetts Lake. Lots of wildlife watching opportunities along the way.

Restroom and vending machine breaks along the way. Bring snacks if you like - plenty of pretty places to rest along this route. At Van Cortlandt, we will end by the golf house cafe, where you can buy lunch or just relax. We will end the main part of the walk here. The 1 train, Manhattan express buses, Metronorth and Bx buses to the East Bronx are easily accessible from our ending point.

After lunch, I will be available to take anyone who may be interested for a fast-paced hike around the southern portion of the Mosholu River. This second optional part will be a condensed repeat of the informational tour I gave on July 30th. During this hike, we will walk through the original course of the now-underground parts of the Mosholu River, see where the evidence of the river underneath still exists and talk about the two islands - Marble Hill and Paparinemin - which became part of the mainland when the River was rerouted. Depending on where you choose to drop off from this second part, your total walking distance for the day should be about 6.5 - 7 miles. During the second part, we will be close to the 1 train on Broadway, Metronorth, Manhattan express buses, and several Bx buses.

Suggested Transportation to Redmond Park:
From Grand Central: take Metronorth (Hudson Line) to Yonkers Station (fare: $11). From the station, take the Beeline 25 or the Beeline 7 bus , both of which will take you very close to the park. Contact me for details on the route if needed.

From West Bronx:
1 Train to 242nd st
At 242nd, Beeline 1 bus to Riverdale Ave and Main St
Transfer to Beeline 7, which will take you very close to the park

From East Bronx:
4 train to Woodlawn (last stop)
Beeline 20 bus to Yonkers Ave and Central Park Ave
Transfer to Beeline 7 bus, take to Yonkers Ave & Valentine St, very close to the park

Ticks: theoretically, there could be ticks along the South County Trail and in Van Cortlandt Park, so dress like you normally would for a hike in the woods.
